WESTFIELD, NJ — Savory Spice Shop in Westfield and Chef Christine Migton of Chez Catherine will team up on Monday, April 16, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for a night of food, wine and giving. The event will benefit the John M. Migton Foundation's Boxwood Junction, an organization striving to provide an inclusive community for people with disabilities.
Attendees will experience a cooking demonstration and enjoy appetizers and wine.
The John M. Migton Foundation was created by a group of families and friends of people with disabilities who want a better future for their loved ones, Christine Migton explained. The foundation is named for John Migton, who died suddenly at the age of 62 in 2015. Its goal is to create an innovative residential and employment model to support people with disabilities and to allow them to live with those who have chosen to mentor them in an inclusive community.
“Our intention is to create a place where people of all abilities can live, work and thrive,” Migton said. “We imagine a sensory-friendly community of businesses and residences with soft lighting, low noise heating and cooling systems and gentle colors.”
Currently, the foundation is exploring property in Hunterdon, Somerset and Monmouth counties, she said.
“Our ideal site has at least 30 acres to allow space for businesses, community areas and housing. We’re also open to donations of property,” Migton said.
The menu Monday night will feature spices from Savory Spice Shop in ways that enhance everyday foods.
“We’re going to do a mix of hot and cold foods and, of course, desserts,” Migton said. “One of the benefits of having access to a professional French kitchen is being able to use the ice cream machine.”
She and Savory Spice Shop owner Marty Silverman hope that guests will leave the event with some new techniques and inspirations.
“Recipes will be provided as well,” she said. “Vermont Creamery is also donating some of their amazing cheeses.”
The event will take place at Savory Spice, 138 E. Broad St. Attendees will receive 15 percent off all spices and seasonings during the event. Tickets are $30. All tickets sales will go directly to Boxwood Junction.
Reservations are required; spots are limited. Board members of the foundation will be on hand to talk about the project.
