WESTFIELD, NJ — The space that housed an innovative taco restaurant for a brief time is now home to a popup fried ice cream shop.

Sidewalk signs in front of InnovAsian Taco, 106 Quimby St., show that it is home to Frizzled NJ, which is offering an assortment of fried ice cream and fried Oreos for the summer.

Frizzled NJ staff member Dan Chung said the shop, which has been open for about a week, uses an air fryer to crisp the pastry surrounding the outside of the ice cream. Customers can choose from six flavors of ice cream, including hazelnut and cappuccino, along with a series of crust coatings.

The coatings on offer include Reese’s Puffs, Fruity Pebbles and Rice Krispies. That creation may be finished off with traditional ice cream toppings as well as some nontraditional ones, such as green tea powder and the chocolate-covered Japanese biscuits known as Pocky Sticks.

The shop has been well received, Chung said. But the recent increases in outdoor temperatures do not necessarily yield an increase in visitors to the establishment.

“It depends on the day,” Chung said when asked about business. “It’s been very hot this week. You don’t see many people walking around the downtown.”

The shop got a rave review from Downtown Westfield Corporation, which posted to social media about a recent visit that included trying hazelnut ice cream with coco crispy crust and a drizzle of fudge.

“Warm and lightly crispy on the outside and creamy cool inside,” the DWC post said. “Not greasy at all. It’s air fried.”
