WESTFIELD, NJ — John La Forte battled cancer for 15 years, his daughter said.
But when the 75-year-old former Westfield salon owner came down with coronavirus, he lasted just three weeks, daughter Lisa La Forte said.
“He struggled until the end,” she said Friday.
The former owner of Heads First and Salon 2000 in Westfield held on just a little bit longer after receiving an experimental dose of plasma therapy earlier this month. But it was not enough to carry him until his 40th wedding anniversary set for Monday, Lisa La Forte said.
Many people, she said, reached out to her when she issued a call for people to help with donations of plasma from patients who have recovered from coronavirus. And they’re continuing to reach out, Lisa La Forte said.
“Everyone is just continuing to message me, which is just great,” she said. “Half of them are strangers. They just found me from online.”
Now that the family is laying him to rest, Lisa La Forte said, they have a different call for help: funds to help pay for the burial.
Lisa La Forte’s co-workers have established a GoFundMe Page to raise monies for the funeral costs.
“John was a great man whose hardworking and loving spirit will be remembered by us all,” the page says. “John was the ultimate husband and father, putting all of his energy into providing for his beloved wife Roseanne and their greatest accomplishment, their daughter Lisa.”
Lisa La Forte has dedicated her life to caring for her father and mother, the page says.
“Now it is our turn to help Lisa and Roseanne with any donation possible to help cover funeral costs,” the organizers write.
