WESTFIELD, NJ — A Westfield High School graduate is recovering from serious injuries she sustained when struck by an SUV in Belmar last month.

Carly Friedman, 23, who was once a double varsity athlete at the high school, has seen an outpouring of support from community members over the past six weeks, Olivia Schiffer, a childhood friend of Friedman’s said.

“Carly is strong resilient and optimistic,” Schiffer said. “None of this has been easy for her, but she is on the road to recovery. The damage to her lower extremities was severe and extensive. However, Carly is expected to make a full recovery.”

Friedman is set to come home to Westfield this week, where she will remain for the next month or so until she can walk, Schiffer said.

“At that point in her recovery, she will move to Kessler where she will start intensive physical therapy to learn how to stand, walk and run again,” Schiffer said. “The overall recovery is expected to take about 6-plus months.”

In addition to the monies raised via a GoFundMe page for Friedman, friends and family have partnered with what Schiffer said is one of Friedman’s favorite restaurants to help support her recovery.

Arirang Hibachi Steakhouse, 1230 Route 22 West, Mountainside, will donate 15% of proceeds from purchases made for dinner or takeout Wednesday, July 17, and Thursday, July 18. For reservations, call 908-518-9733.

Diners are asked to fill out and present this flyerpdf when purchasing meals in support of Friedman.
