WESTFIELD, NJ — What does it take to make a record-setting pizza pie?

It took five gallons of sauce, three pounds of cheese, 40 pounds of dough and nearly 16 hours of work, said Burim Regjaj, the owner of Outta Hand Pizza, who served up slices of a 9-foot by 4-foot Sicilian pizza made to look as it were an American flag at a movie night in Westfield Saturday.

Regjaj has submitted an application to Guinness Book of World Records for recognition as having the “Largest Square Pizza” and the “Largest Flag Pizza” in the world and even though Guinness Book hasn’t made his record official, it might as well be.

Regjaj said he submitted photos with measurements to the Guinness Book and he anticipates he will hear back within 11 weeks. But he didn’t have to wait long for the recognition to roll in. The World Record Academy on Wednesday recognized his pie as setting a new world record for the “Largest Pizza Flag.”

“It was refreshing,” Regjaj told TAPinto Westfield. “It was great news. It really confirmed that our efforts didn’t go in vain. They obviously collect records such as my pizza flag, and they qualified it as a world record.”

Regjaj and his staff at Outta Hand Pizza had assembled and baked the Sicilian pizza showing the red, white and blue of the American flag for Westfield’s “Summer Movie Night Kickoff” festivities, an event that drew about 150 people.

Regjaj is no stranger to getting props for his pizza pie. He took home top prize for his pie at the Westfield Area YMCA’s Annual Pizza Palooza last March, a contest for the best slice.

With stories about Regjaj’s enormous patriotic pie circulating far and wide, including with a syndicated version on TAPinto’s NJ Flavor, Regjaj is pleased to see his slice of fame but noted that it is in the name of his local community.

“I’m very excited that Westfield is supporting us on social media,” Regjaj said. “This record really is dedicated to the people of Westfield, specifically the first responders and veterans. We’re very happy and satisfied with it.”
