WESTFIELD, NJ — Following mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend, an advocacy group here has scheduled a rally to demand a federal ban on assault weapons.

Westfield 20/20 is organizing the rally to be held at Mindowaskin Park, on East Broad Street Monday, from 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., organizers announced.

In addition to lobbying for a federal assault weapons ban, the organizers are seeking limits on high capacity magazines and universal background checks.

“This is a memorial service, but also a rally of ‘no more thoughts and prayers’ but instead a call to action to hold our state and federally elected officials accountable to vote on measures to end gun violence once and for all,” said Emily Root, one of the organizers from Westfield.

In January, a Westfield resident called on the Town Council to support gun safety measures including a federal ban on the sale of assault firearms. It followed similar measures other municipal and county governments in North Jersey had taken.
