WESTFIELD, NJ — If in the swing of the shopping season you've seen blue bags emblazoned with this town’s logo, the Green Team wants you to know that they were given out as thanks to businesses participating in its Green Medallion Program.

The program encourages local businesses to enact environmentally sustainable measures such as using fewer plastic bags and providing customers with paper takeout containers.

To aid businesses in this effort the Westfield Green Team distributed 545 reusable shopping bags to 30 businesses participating in its Green Medallion Program, Kirti Malik, a volunteer with the Team, said.

“These bags were purchased through a Sustainable Jersey grant and at no cost to Westfield,” Malik said, referring to the $2,000 grant from PSEG Foundation, the charitable arm of PSE&G’s parent company.

“We hope to reduce the amount of single use plastics given away by local merchants and to provide customers with reusable bag that they can use the entire holiday season.”
