WESTFIELD, NJ — After repeated health code violations, the owner of a pizza restaurant in the downtown has been ordered to shape up sanitary practices at his establishment or be shut down.
The Board of Health on Monday warned an owner of Fiamma Wood Fired Pizza that if his restaurant receives another “conditionally satisfactory” rating — a rating that must be remedied within 30 days, under the regulations — or an “unsatisfactory” rating, the Health Department would shut him down for four days. The restaurant had received four consecutive ratings of conditionally satisfactory in recent months, officials said.
“In the course of the next two years, if there’s any rating which is ‘conditionally satisfactory’ or ‘unsatisfactory,’ you will be closed for four days,” Avallone told Tony Fetahaj at the hearing.
Fetahaj detailed for the board how he would remedy existing violations ranging from refrigeration issues to employees not washing their hands before handling food. Fetehaj said he is bringing in new refrigerators to address the cooling issues and that he would require twice weekly training for his employees.
“Training is going to be done on a weekly basis — at least twice a week — until all the employees are up to speed. We are going to try to fix that place,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of issues.”
Fetehaj told the board that he may close for several days during renovations.
It is not the first time the Westfield Board of Health has cited the restaurant on Quimby Street for violations of the health code. As then reported, the health department issued Fiamma three consecutive conditional ratings between May of 2016 and June of 2017 for recurrent issues, mainly the hand-washing sink and the cooling temperatures for foods.
Board of Health member Dr. Vasilios Diamantopoulos emphasized the importance of hand washing.
“We just don’t want people to get sick,” Diamantopoulos said. “This is not just coming in and nitpicking. There can be some real ramifications.”
Fetehaj said he intends for it to be the last time he must remedy Board of Health violations.
“There are so many more ways to improve what we’re doing and what we’re serving and the future I will show I won't disappoint you. I promise you. … We will keep up with all the procedures.”
