NEWARK, NJ — The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating an apparent suicide that occurred in the Bloomfield Police Department overnight.
The preliminary investigation indicates that retired Newark Police Lt. Patrick Montella shot himself in the Bloomfield Headquarters while being processed. The 58-year-old was a resident of Bloomfield.
Montella was arested for an alleged act of domestic violence and was expected to be released on a summons. He then shot himself.
He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:16 a.m. Wednesday.
The investigation is active and ongoing. No other information is available at this time.
