WESTFIELD, NJ — Police have ticketed the driver who struck and killed a Scotch Plains man crossing West South Avenue and North Scotch Plains Avenue Friday.

John Cregg, 87, was crossing when James Reid, a 74-year-old driver from Parlin, hit him with his car, Sgt. Michael Walsh said. Police issued summonses for failure to observe a traffic control device, failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian and careless driving, Walsh said. Reid remained on scene, Walsh said.

Cregg was “conscious and alert” when officers arrived around 12:52 p.m., police Chief Christopher Battiloro had said. First responders transported Cregg to University Hospital in Newark, where he subsequently died, Battiloro said.
