WESTFIELD, NJ — A report of a stolen vehicle prompted a high-speed chase that ended when the suspect’s SUV crashed into a house in the 500 block of Bradford Avenue, police said.

Springfield police on Thursday announced the arrest of Bryan Spells Jr., of Newark. Police said in a Facebook post that officers charged Spells with receiving stolen property, eluding police, resisting arrest, possession of narcotics and multiple motor vehicle violations. The post did not provide Spells’ age and Springfield police did not immediately respond to a request for further information.

Springfield Police Officer Ken Novak had spotted the stolen vehicle driving on Route 22 at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday and when the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, Spells fled, police said.

Novak chased Spells into Mountainside and then Westfield, where the vehicle crashed near the corner of Mountain and Bradford avenues, police said.

Spells, who was driving a black SUV, lost control of the vehicle as he was trying to turn right onto Bradford Avenue from Mountain Avenue, Sgt. Michael Walsh, of the Westfield Police Department, said.

The SUV hit a stop sign at the intersection of Bradford and Mountain avenues and then crashed into the corner of a home in the 500 block of Bradford Avenue, Walsh said.

Spells then ran from the vehicle, police said.

Springfield Police Officer Boris Yusupov spotted Spells in the area of Dudley Court in Westfield, where he chased him into a rear yard of a home and Novak arrested him, Springfield police said in the statement.

Mountainside police and the Union County Police also joined in the chase, authorities said.
