WESTFIELD, NJ — A three-sport athlete headed to Princeton University to play lacrosse, he’s got both sports savvy and academic acumen.
An 18-year-old senior, Colin Freer is the Union County Scholar Athlete representing Westfield High School in the Union County Interscholastic Association Conference. Freer is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“Everyone loves to get the athletic achievements, but I think the classroom achievements are what I’m most proud of,” said Freer, who also plays football and basketball.
Each year, the athletics department picks a male and female student athlete who embody the qualities of an exceptional scholar athlete: leadership, intelligence, dedication and motivation, along with striving for greatness in athletics and academics.
The humanities, Freer said, are his strong suit.
“I love English and history and really any class that relates to everyday society,” he said. “I love learning about the environment and how certain events are impacting today’s society — classes that really make me think about not only the past but the future.”
While formal lacrosse practices are called off due to COVID-19 this season, Freer’s solo workouts continue.
“I’m receiving a workout plan from Princeton, where I’ll be continuing my lacrosse career so that’s going to be keeping me busy,” he said.
Freer said he’s been practicing his stick handling skills by throwing into a net in his backyard and maintaining his physical shape with both strength and cardio workouts.
“I try to work out every day just staying in shape,” he said. “My main goal is arriving at Princeton in the fall to be in the best shape as possible.”
Weekly video chat meetings help Freer to keep in touch with his fellow teammates, he said.
Freer’s advice for his younger teammates: “Take every practice, every game and just cherish it; you never know when a game is going to get cut short,” he said.
