WESTFIELD NJ — While the varsity golf player has not been on the course recently due to the coronavirus pandemic, he is still practicing the game at home and staying in touch with his teammates.
A four-year senior varsity golf player set to play competitive golf in college next year, Jason Lee is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“A true competitor and absolutely committed to the mission of the team every year he has played, he has one of the best short games I have ever seen from a high school player,” said head varsity golf coach Ryan Daly. “And he has proven to be a clutch player time and again.”
In the 2019 Union County Conference Tournament, Lee was awarded 1st place in the Individual Division. He scored 71 points making an even par, Daly said. Lee also led his team to victory in the State Sectional Tournament where they won first place.
Daly said that Lee has also received many team acknowledgments including “Co-Most Valuable Player” his junior year, the “Rising Star Award” his sophomore year and the “Rookie of the Year Award” his freshman year.
Lee is not only a skilled player but has also been a leader on the team as captain. While the golf team has been off the field, Lee has organized virtual team meetings for varsity and junior varsity players. Daly said these meetings were designed to keep players’ games in shape and inspire them as well.
Although Lee wishes that he could be playing with his team right now, Daly said that “[Lee] shows an incredible attitude and understands that the safety of the country comes first.”
Even though Lee is not on the field with his teammates, he continues to practice his game at home.
“I bought a golf net to hit into, to keep my swing in shape,” Lee said. “I practice chipping in my backyard, and I putt on a putting mat in my house.”
Aside from golf, Lee takes advanced placement and honors courses. While he said that balancing the two is challenging, it is “also fun because it keeps me busy and forces me to work hard.”
He’s been playing golf competitively since he was 6 years old.
“I first picked up a golf club before I could remember and have been playing competitively in tournaments since the age of 6,” Lee said.
Lee will be attending Babson College in Massachusetts and will be playing competitive golf there.
“Golf is primarily an individual game,” Lee said. “Having a group of guys to support you playing along with you has been very fun.”
Lee said that golf has played a key role in turning him into the person he is today. He has also made an impact on his teammates and coach.
“He is one of the most mature and respectful players I have ever had the honor of coaching,” Daly said.
