WESTFIELD, NJ — The 17-year-old senior and captain on the Westfield High School varsity swim team is off to a strong start for the winter season.

Jeremy Kronheimer placed first in the 50-yard individual freestyle on Tuesday. It was among a series events of he competed in at the swim meet against Governor Livingston High School. Kronheimer is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the week.

“In the past has placed in counties and qualified for the Meet of Champions,” said head boys swim coach Jeffrey Knight. “He will be a key contributor for us in the sprints throughout the season.”

Kronheimer has been swimming competitively since he 5 years old, beginning on the JCC team in Scotch Plains and moving ahead to swim at the YMCA. He has been with the high school’s swim team since his freshman year and said the season is off to a good start.

“Our team is looking very good this year,” Kronheimer said. “We definitely have a lot of good freshman talent this year. That is helping out a lot.”

Kronheimer said he is hopeful about winning at an upcoming county competition and moving on to state sectionals. He’s got a good track record, having placed third in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at a county competition last year.

Training is key, Kronheimer said.

“The practices that we’re doing are very important and helpful,” he said. “It helps us to become much stronger and faster in the pool.”

The boys varsity swim team next competes against rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood at the Westfield Area YMCA at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Kronheimer, who also throws javelin on the high school’s track team, noted the swim team’s sense of unity.

“We’re very team oriented, and we really have a strong bond with everyone,” he said. “We do a good job making sure everyone is happy, motivated and looking toward the same goals of what we are trying to accomplish. That really helps because it allows us as a team to swim for something.”
