WESTFIELD, NJ — Jessi Schlewitt knows how to set a girl up for success.

A 17-year-old setter on the Westfield High School varsity volleyball team, Schlewitt is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

Schlewitt, who is a senior, secured eight assists and five digs against Millburn, logged 12 assists against Hudson Catholic, then secured 11 assists and one dig in a tournament game against Marlboro.

“Steady player to set up our attack, consistent server, great attitude, she never gives up,” said head varsity volleyball coach Bev Torok.

Schlewitt, who last week wrapped her third year of playing volleyball for Westfield High School, said she enjoys the quick pace of the game. And while she noted that losing the tournament game to Hillsborough last week was disappointing, she described the season as exhilarating.

“Volleyball is just such a fast paced game,” Schlewitt said. “The points go by pretty quickly. It takes a lot of mental stamina, and I like that.”

Schlewitt, who will play softball in the spring, said the sport differs from other athletics.

“What makes it really different from other sports is that you’re not interacting with the other team that much,” she said. “You’re on your side with your teammates.”

This in turn requires the team to develop a high level of trust, something the Lady Blue Devils have done, Schlewitt said.

“You need a strong bond, and to have a lot of trust with each other to make it a successful team,” she said.

Among the season’s high points, Schlewitt said, was a game against Hudson Catholic.

“They just have some really strong hitters, but we won the game in two sets, which was really exciting for us,” she said. “We all just came together and left it all on the court.”

Schlewitt doesn’t just aim high on the volleyball court. After excelling in two advanced courses last year, Schlewitt said, she hopes to study neuroscience in college.

“I took AP biology and AP psychology last year,” said Schlewitt, who is applying to universities. “I was really curious about the two, and neuroscience is just the perfect medium, I feel.”
