WESTFIELD, NJ — The Lady Blue Devils pulled out a win against Scotch Plains bringing the season to a close with an 8-1 record last week.

Westfield High School senior Julia McGann finished second in the 200 freestyle and third in the backstroke March 25. McGann, 18, is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the week.

“Julia has been a key component in every big meet,” said head coach Steven Whittington. “She has been [among] the county’s best and a meet of the champions qualifier in both the backstroke and distance freestyle.”

The meet against Scotch Plains was only the second in-person meet of the season for the Lady Blue Devils, who were coming off of a tough loss to Summit. McGann recalled the both the loss to Summit and the Lady Blue Devils' comeback against rival Scotch Plains.

“That meet was a testament to our character because we kept our heads up high and fought until our last race, but we came back and ended our season on a high note,” she said.

McGann said the meet against Scotch Plains March 25 was a good way to wrap up the season.

“It’s always a good meet,” she said. “So having that as our last meet to finish on was great. The team morale was very high.”

McGann, who said she plans on studying in the field of the sciences in college, will continue her swimming career at Washington and Lee University next year, which she said presents the perfect balance of academics and athletics for her.

“I really bonded with the team,” She said. “So, I’m really excited to be there in the fall.”

Whittington said that McGann’s skill in multiple events has been a key.

“Her ability to swim multiple events really well sets her apart from other athletes and allows me the flexibility to make the perfect lineup,” he said. “As a captain, she has earned the respect of her coach and her teammates.”
