WESTFIELD, NJ — Mary Beke picked up seven goals and three assists last year as a junior for the varsity girls hockey team, fourth on the team in points in their 6-15 season.
The senior co-captain is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“She is one of our most important players on the ice and has really matured into an off ice leader as well,” said head coach Matt Gualtieri.
Beke has been playing at the varsity level since freshman year, where she was second on the team in goals with nine, and in her last year with the team, she became one of two captains.
“I have tried to follow the example set by the captains from my prior 3 years,” Beke said. “I try to embody the values of our team, work hard and step up to lead by example when needed.”
The team was in its second year when Beke joined, and she had an instant impact.
“She has the ability to skate the puck out of our end or pass it to a forward to break the puck out,” Gualtieri said. “She has really worked on the finer details of her defensive game too.”
Beke’s brother Matt, a Westfield junior and member of the boys varsity ice hockey team, inspired her to pick up hockey in second grade.
“I will miss the game of hockey in general as I have been playing since I was in 2nd grade,” Mary Beke said. “I will also miss the friendships that I have made with the girls on the team and all the fun we’ve had together.”
