WESTFIELD NJ — Senior varsity tennis player Mia Fleming recorded 11 winning matches last season playing both first and second doubles.
A co-captain of the girls’ varsity tennis team Fleming, 17, is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
“I am very excited to receive this recognition because everyone on the team is amazing and it’s my last year on the team,” Fleming said.
Fleming has been playing tennis since she was 3 years old and began playing competitively when she was in middle school.
“Being on the varsity tennis team has taught me a lot of leadership skills and team work,” Fleming said. “I play doubles and it’s easy to get in your head when you mess up, but working well and cheering on your partner makes that stress go away.”
Throughout her time on the team, Fleming has “evolved into a vocal leader,” said varsity tennis coach Matthew Varhley. "She is one of the most coachable players I’ve had the pleasure to teach.”
Fleming has also received three varsity letters playing lacrosse. In September 2019, she committed to the University of Southern California and will be playing lacrosse there.
“[Fleming] is a great competitor and always plays to win for her team,” Varhley said. “She is aggressive and controls the net.”
Fleming is looking forward to the team’s first match this week.
“The team is going in with a great mindset after winning sectionals last year,” she said. “It’s going to be a short but strong season.”
