WESTFIELD, NJ — Despite her senior season being canceled, the Elon girls lacrosse commit is staying ready and active during COVID-19.

Mikaela Buoscio, an 18-year-old three-sport athlete, has been a key part of Westfield High School’s girls lacrosse program. She started on the varsity team as a sophomore playing midfielder, and her game has only improved since. Buoscio is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“This season would have been her best yet,” said head coach Abby Cohn. “She became a true leader, as she was selected as captain. Although her leadership role transitioned to one from home, she pushed the girls to stay positive and to get outside on nice days to play lacrosse and work out.”

In her junior season, Buoscio led the team in forced turnovers with 40. She also took control of 22 draws, second highest on the team.

“What I miss most about the season is getting pumped up on game day,” Buoscio said about missing her senior season due to COVID-19. “Whether it was in the field house with the trainers, or in school, seeing all of my teammates in their uniforms. Every moment made me so happy and psyched to play.”

In her sophomore year, Buoscio learned from and worked alongside Natalie Bond, a Westfield graduate and lacrosse player at Stanford.

“Mikaela so closely followed her game that it allowed her to improve in such a short amount of time using Natalie as her mentor,” Cohn said. “The two also played soccer together, and when Natalie graduated, Mikaela seamlessly filled her role.”

Buoscio is set to play Division l lacrosse at Elon next year.

“I’ve been doing a lot of training to stay fit for college. Now that the fields are open, I’ve been shooting around at Kehler and Houlihan, as well as running 120s. I’m on my stick every day,” Buoscio said.

She suggests that all younger athletes stay motivated, regardless of cancellations, and it is also a great stress relief to get outside and work hard.

“Whatever you do, keep moving,” said Buoscio, who also plays soccer and track. “You want to be prepared when sports are able to start up again.”
