WESTFIELD, NJ — A great leader both on and off the baseball diamond, third-baseman Victor Coustan was penciled in to bat fifth this season, his coach said.

Before COVID-19 came to New Jersey, the 17-year-old Westfield High School senior was set to come back this spring after recovering from a surgery, head varsity baseball coach Bob Brewster said. Coustan is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.

“He showed very little rust from the surgery during our one-week practice before COVID-19 shut us down,” Brewster said.

The coach said that Coustan had batted .283 last season and was second on the team in RBIs in 2019. Coustan began what Brewster described as a spectacular game-saving double play in last year’s sectional final against Ridge.

On Wednesday, Coustan recalled that it was the bottom of the sixth inning and while the Blue Devils were up by one run Ridge had the bases loaded.

“He hit a rocket right at me,” said Coustan, who recalls catching the ball tossing it to second-baseman Christian Pansini who passed it to first baseman Danny Kohler for the double-play.

The surgery came after Coustan was injured in a hard run to first base that ended in a somersault, he said.

“They took cartilage from my knee, and they put it into my ankle because I had missing cartilage from the injury,” Coustan said.

With New Jersey’s stay-at-home order in effect, Coustan said, he continues to practice his batting.

“Every day I’m hitting outside off of the tee to make sure that my swing stays consistent, and hopefully we can get a summer season,” he said.

While high school sports have been canceled for the rest of the season, Coustan said, there has been some discussion among players and parents of a summer league.

“We’re trying to stay motivated,” he said. “We may be doing a summer league or something like that to get the team together on last time.”

Coustan heads to Indiana University in the fall, where he hopes to study media, with his focus on sports media and a minor in business.

“Hopefully, I’ll play club baseball there, too,” he said.
