WESTFIELD, NJ — Scotch Plains-Fanwood took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but could not hold on for the win as the Blue Devils stunned the Raiders with a 5-4, come-from-behind victory on Thursday at Westfield.
Danny Wilkinson started for the Raiders and gave up 3 runs (2 earned) in four full innings of work as he struck out six, walked three and hit a batter. He left with the scored tied 3-3. Nick Merkel went 2 1/3 innings and took the loss.
Christian Pansini pitched a clean seventh on just 13 pitches and got the win, after starter Michael Catanzaro went six innings and gave up seven hits, four runs (two earned) and 2 walks with six strikeouts.
Pansini also provided an offensive spark for the Blue Devils. He went 2-for-3 with three steals and three runs scored. Victor Coustan went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI for Westfield
The Raiders' Willie Gale went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored and raised his batting average to .667 on the season. Wilkinson helped his own cause by driving in a run with a single.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood is scheduled to next host Millville on Friday, April 12, while Westfield will host AL Johnson (Clark, NJ).
