ROSELLE, NJ — Blue Devils boys varsity ice hockey thoroughly defeated West Essex Tuesday as Matt Beke netted a hat trick.
Westfield opened the night on a power play goal scored by Matt Beke coming off of a pass from Brendan Kotiga.
“We felt like this goal set the momentum for the rest of the game,” Beke said. “We were able to keep putting the puck in the net from there.”
As the Knights were searching for a way to shift the momentum, junior Joey Brogan added one for Westfield to put the team up 2-0. Later in the second period, Beke put his second into the back of the net on another power play to put the game of reach for West Essex.
The Blue Devils did not stop their charge after that. Greg Oliveri scored his first of the season on an unassisted goal to give Westfield a four-goal advantage. With 10 minutes left, Nick Forno wrapped around from behind the goal, giving it to Matteo Mancheno for his seventh goal of the season.
Matt Beke made it 6-0 late in the game off of a Dan McDonald assist to give him the hat trick.
“I was excited that I got the hat trick, but I felt better about the team’s effort in this game,” Beke said. “We played an all around game and we felt like we had an edge tonight.”
The Blue Devils had a dominant performance on offense in this game. West Essex goalie Jason Albrecht faced 31 shots, while Westfield’s Jack Ruckman faced just 12.
Westfield will next face off against Hillsborough on Jan. 17 at 6:15 p.m. at Flemington Ice Arena. The Raiders have won four out of their last five games.
