MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair topped Westfield 4-3 in a tight game on Thursday night at Clary Anderson Arena.
After a scoreless 10 minutes, Westfield’s Nick Forno opened the night with his seventh goal of the season.
The Blue Devils started the second period strong, with Matteo Mancheno scoring on a one timer, assisted by Thomas Conrod. Westfield had a golden opportunity later in the period, after two Montclair players were penalized, just four seconds apart, giving the Blue Devils a five-on-three power play. Although keeping it in the offensive zone for the entire two-man advantage, they could not capitalize.
Brett Janifer tied it up for the Mounties with two goals in a row, one in the second period, followed by one in the third.
Montclair’s momentum was quickly stopped by Brendan Kotiga with 6 minutes left, to regain the lead for Westfield, making it 3-2.
The Mounties answered back, Eamonn Thall scored with 4 minutes left to tie the game at three.
Montclair’s Kellum Foster-Palmer scored the game winner 2 minutes later.
Blue Devils head coach Joe Bertucci discussed the team’s efforts throughout the game.
“We can’t get too worked up at the refs. In the end it’s us playing on the ice, and we have to keep our minds straight and focus on our play,” Bertucci said. “It’s on us. They wanted it more than us on our power play, and we have to come away with a better outcome with those chances.”
Senior goalie Jack Ruckman started for the Blue Devils and captain Lucas Podvey for Montclair.
The Blue Devils will face Montclair again on Jan. 31.
Westfield next plays Livingston at 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 13, at Richard Codey Arena in West Orange. The Blue Devils beat the Lancers 4-1 earlier this season.
