MONTCLAIR, NJ — The defending McInnis Cup champion Westfield Blue Devils’ run for a repeat was stopped short as they were defeated by Montclair 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Early in the game, Westfield sophomore Greg Oliveri came within inches of a goal, but was stopped by Montclair goalie Lucas Podvey.
“I tried to refresh my mind and get back on the ice with confidence,” Oliveri said while discussing his breakaway opportunity. “I didn’t change the way I was playing, and I had to move on from that.”
Kellum Foster-Palmer got the game’s first goal, as he scored off a deflection four minutes into the game.
Just 2 minutes later, George Osterberg scored as the Mountie power play expired to give them a 2-0 lead.
Montclair had a golden opportunity on a shorthanded breakaway but was stopped by Blue Devil captain Trevor Tanella as he got his stick in the way.
Seconds after a big Mountie hit, Brett Janifer netted one to put the team up by three halfway through the second period.
The Blue Devils will compete in the NJSIAA Public B State Tournament, where they enter as a two seed.
