SOMERSET, NJ — Westfield beat previously unbeaten and 19th ranked Ridge 4-2 at Protec Ponds on Saturday night.
Coming off a 4-1 win against Livingston, Westfield continued its offensive output with the game’s first three goals.
Westfield's first goal came from Matteo Mancheno within a minute-and-a-half, assisted by Matt Beke. Nick Forno added another later in the first period. Captain Trevor Tanella went the length of the ice to score the Blue Devils’ third goal in the second period.
Ridge answered with two goals in the second period. Both power play goals were scored within a 30 second span. The first by junior Tommy Vitolo, and the second by freshman Zachary Alvin.
Westfield’s Andrew Principato iced the game in the third period with a tip in goal to give the Blue Devils a two goal lead, and the Blue Devils held on for the win. The team later rewarded him with Westfield’s hard hat, representing their player of the game.
“After Ridge scored those two power play goals we could really feel their momentum building up,” Principato said. “After I scored that goal the whole team celebrated a little extra.”
Senior goalie Jack Ruckman got the win for Westfield, and Ridge’s captain Marcus Fabiunke started in net.
Ridge is now 6-1-2, after Westfield handed them their first loss of the season. The Blue Devils are 4-2-1 after going unbeaten in their last four games.
The Blue Devils are set to play Glen Rock at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Ice House in Hackensack. Westfield previously defeated the Panthers 5-0 on Dec. 11.
