WESTFIELD, NJ — Better move quickly if you want to run in this race.
The early bird entry fee for the Westfield Area YMCA 5K Run for Everyone ends Friday, Aug. 30, organizers said. The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 15, at 9:30 a.m. and supports special needs programs at the Y.
The Y is also hosting a free 0.15-mile Kids Run for ages 8 and under at 9 a.m. Registration is required and all participants will receive a ribbon, organizers said.
Initial proceeds of the run established the Dragonfly Program, which offers physical, recreational and social programs for young adults with special needs for free or at a minimal cost.
Money raised enabled the Y to hire a certified therapeutic recreation specialist to oversee these programs and develop new ones. Last year’s proceeds continued to expand Dragonfly and support the Y’s summer inclusion camp program.
“The Dragonfly class participants are already training for the 5K. Everyone is very excited and looking forward to improving over last year,” said Westfield Area YMCA Special Needs Coordinator Jill Koerber.
Awards will be given to overall and age group winners. Participants will have a chance to win prizes and refreshments will be served.
