WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School varsity bowling team has had a promising season for the second straight year.
Led by sophomore Dante Morales and senior Trey Rabinowitz, the 15-2 Blue Devils are on a seven-game win streak, all by a score of 7-0. Freshman Perry Cuccaro has brought his skills to the team, while scoring over a 200 in the first game of each match 10 times.
“After Will [Shepherd] and Dylan [Kurstedt] graduated, Perry coming in this year has made it easier for the entire team,” Morales said. “We don’t have to put as much pressure on ourselves knowing that he can come in and perform the way he has been all year.”
Last year, Westfield went 17-1 on the year, closing out the season with a 10-game win streak.
In NJ.com’s preseason rankings, the Blue Devils stood at ninth in the state.
“We felt it was important for the feeder program to be started, which is for players in middle school. It was started six years ago, and it continues to draw more interest from these kids into high school bowling,” said head coach Ralph Corey, when discussing his team’s recent successes. “We also encourage our players to attend personal coaching sessions at Jersey Lanes during the offseason, for their skills to fully develop.”
Dante Morales also noted his team’s success in the past two seasons.
“We all have good chemistry together, and we get along with each other,” Morales said. “That always gives us an advantage when facing other teams.”
The Blue Devils defeated Union 7-0 on Dec. 18. Westfield will next take on Union on Feb. 4.
“We are extremely happy with the way we’ve performed this year, our 15-2 record doesn’t tell the whole story for this team,” Corey said. “This team has come from behind in some matches and even won in the last frame, or the last shot of the game. These guys never feel they are out of a match, and we hope to bring that confidence into future matches.”
