WESTFIELD, NJ — Tamaques School fourth grader Luke Politi has a lofty goal — to raise $5,000 in this month’s “October Saves” hockey fundraiser, which donates money to cancer charity Lara’s League. As a goalie for the Union Thunder, Politi wanted to do what he could to offer his support.
“A lot of people in my family have had cancer,” Politi said. “And I was thinking about not just my family, but other people too. I thought I could be a part of helping to stop cancer.”
“October Saves” allows hockey goalies to collect a per-save pledge or flat donation. The player’s saves are counted through the end of October (Politi’s last game this month is Oct. 27), and money collected will be used to support research for women’s and pediatric cancers through Lara’s League, a nonprofit organization.
“The goalie community is a tight-knit group,” said Politi’s mother Lauren. “It’s so nice that they can get together for this challenge. The concept is that a ‘save’ in a game can help to save a life. And since our family has been affected by cancer, Luke has a real connection to this fundraiser.”
To date, Politi has racked up 22 saves this month, and has already raised more than $1,100 towards his personal goal of $5,000. To make a pledge or donation, visit Politi’s fundraising page at https://octobersaves.org/goalie/loolooash/.
