CRANFORD, NJ – Local music is being brought to the forefront as Cranford prepares for its first Porchfest.

Porchfest is a community music festival that’s spread throughout the town as local artists perform on the front porches of Cranford homes.

“A while back I was introduced to Cranford Community Connection so we sat down and thought about what we could do new,” Randy Geis, event organizer, said. “I reached out to some of the moms at school and asked what they’d like to see and they introduced me to the idea of Porchfest that’s happened in New Jersey before. It’s a perfect fit for our town to take local musicians and put them on gorgeous porches in town.”

On the day of Porchfest, Saturday, Oct.21, 24 performers will play across eight porches in Cranford. Each performer will play during a specific time slot, which can be viewed on an interactive map.

“The goal was to hit all four parts of town, all four quadrants,” Geis said. “I wanted to do more porches but we decided to start with eight and see where it goes. Hopefully it takes off.”

Each performer is local, with the majority from Cranford. The festival will run from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., with the Alden Street Band performing in Eastman Plaza at 5:30 to wrap up the event.

“Alden Street Band is our grand finale to bring everyone together,” Geis said. “Hopefully from there, they’ll take off to enjoy our restaurants and downtown.”

Porchfest is an all-volunteer event. Everyone who participates, from the musicians to the porch hosts, are unpaid.

“It’s a very simple operation,” Geis said. “It’s free, it’s for the community, and bring your neighbors out to enjoy these beautiful Cranford porches and local music. Set up chairs, chill out, relax, listen to music and chat with some neighbors.”

Porchfest is scheduled for Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a rain date of Nov. 4. To view the performers, homes, and find out more information, click here.
