SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – Senior captain Caley Doell is in her fourth season on the Lakeland girls varsity soccer squad, playing goalie.
She recently stood out in a contest against a traditional powerhouse, host Somers, where she made 15 saves in a 2-1 loss on Oct. 10.
How old were you when you started playing soccer and what got you started?
I’ve been playing soccer since I could start AYSO in elementary school. Both my parents played soccer into high school, so it was pretty much a given that I would start.
What is your favorite thing about being on the soccer team at Lakeland?
I love having something to do every day and having a common goal to try and accomplish with my friends is a lot of fun.
What is your favorite team activity or pregame or postgame ritual that you share with your teammates?
When we do our pre-game cheer we make sure we’re all on the field for good luck. Also, before each half, my teammate Mikayla [Gustavson] and I give each other a hug.
Do you have any goals for your final season at Lakeland?
The rest of our seniors and I kind of have a common goal: to work hard and instill a good work ethic in the younger girls so that our team keeps getting better after we leave.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My dad has been my biggest role model, because he’s very athletic and has always coached me and my sisters, so he’s been there for me the whole way. He’s pushed me to do as well as I could since I was little.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
I like math a lot and looking into concepts like Pascal’s Triangle and the Fibonacci Sequence.
Do you plan on continuing playing soccer in college? Tell us about where you are going to school and why you chose it?
I’m not sure where I’m going to school yet, but I’m planning on playing soccer. I want to go up north because I really like the mountains and the cold winters.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I want to study environmental science because I like being outside and I want to learn more about how to work with nature and preserve biodiversity.
Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro (or college) sports team?
My family is big Tottenham Hotspur fans and we watch the Premier League a lot. I like Hugo Lloris, their goalie.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
I think it really depends on the day, but I normally listen to the “A-List Alternative” playlist on Apple Music. We also have “Tongue Tied” on our warm-up playlist and I like that song, especially on game days.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
I’d want teleportation because I’m always late to everything and it would help me be on time.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
I want to go to Switzerland because there’s really good hiking and zip lining. The waterfalls are gorgeous and everyone is supposed to be really nice.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?
I’m always really hungry after my games and I like to have pasta.
Best place to eat in Yorktown and why?
I like Mexican food and Salsa Fresca is always really good.
What’s the go-to app on your phone and why?
I like Instagram because I like to see all the traveling people do and to find new places to go.
For a young athlete growing up in the Lakeland district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the soccer team and why should they go out for the team?
Even if you don’t love your current team or position or whatever it might be, stick with the sport because eventually you’ll find your place. The Lakeland soccer program is very welcoming and it’s definitely worth staying around for.
