YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Kelsey McDonnell is a forward who was named All-League in 2017 and All-League honorable mention in 2018.
She also plays lacrosse, a sport where she earned All-American honors and tallied her 100th career goal this past spring. McDonnell will play lacrosse next year at Virginia Commonwealth University.
How old were you when you started playing field hockey and what got you started?
My mom signed me up to play in a few clinics in elementary school and then I started playing again after two years freshman year.
What is your favorite thing about being on the field hockey team at Yorktown?
The chemistry of all the girls, on and off the field.
What is your favorite team activity or pregame/postgame ritual that you share with your teammates? What about a personal pregame or postgame ritual?
A pregame ritual for the team is dance parties in the locker room. A personal pregame ritual of mine is listening to music.
Do you have any goals for your final season at Yorktown?
To be a leader; be a successful team and always bettering myself.
Who has been your biggest role model over the years and what have you learned from them?
My parents. They have and continue to teach me everything I know about life.
Tell us one thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
I like to cook.
You have committed to play lacrosse at Virginia Commonwealth University. Why did you choose VCU?
Because they were the perfect fit for me to continue playing lacrosse at a D-1 level. I love the school, the team and coaches.
Do you know what you want to study in college? If yes, what are you planning on studying and why?
I don’t know what I would like to study in college yet.
Who is your favorite professional athlete and pro (or college) sports team?
My favorite professional athlete is Mark Teixeira and favorite pro teams would be the Yankees and the Seahawks.
What is your favorite music to listen to warming up for a game?
Definitely rap and EDM (electronic dance music).
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?
Time travel, so I could see the future and also travel back in time to relive moments.
If you could pick one place to visit on vacation that you’ve never been to, where would you go and why?
Italy, because I have never been there and would love to experience Italy’s culture and greatness.
What is your favorite food to eat before or after a game?
Before games, some sort of pasta. After games, it doesn’t really matter, I’ll eat anything when I’m hungry.
Best place to eat in Yorktown and why?
Heavy Bear. Their food always hits the spot.

Twitter because it not only keeps you in the loop with everyone, it can give you a laugh and also inform you about current situations and statistics.
For a young athlete growing up in the Yorktown district, what would you tell them about the experience of being part of the field hockey team and why should they go out for the team?
I would tell a young athlete to take it all in. Before they know it, it’ll be over. To absorb the family bond that the team provides and thrive with all new experiences that come with it.
