CROTON ON HUDSON, N.Y. - The story of Bethel Homes and Services is more than a century old, but the programs and amenities it provides are strictly 21st century.
Founded in 1911, Bethel was named after a floating chapel, the Bethel Ship John Wesley, which had docked in New York Harbor in 1845 to help newly arrived Swedish immigrants. The ship was later replaced by the New Bethel Ship John Wesley. In 1913, the Bethel Swedish Methodist Episcopal Home for the Aged opened its doors in Brooklyn to serve the needs of the city’s growing senior population. In 1920, it relocated to Ossining.

Today, not-for-profit Bethel boasts campuses in Croton-on-Hudson, Ossining and Valhalla, offering community and residential programs to help seniors age in place.
This includes Bethel Springvale Inn, located on the Croton-on-Hudson campus, which is a 125-apartment, assisted senior living residence that combines quality and affordability. At the Inn, seniors can rent an apartment and turn it into their own, personalized home.

“They can come and go as they please.,” said Patti Pelican, community relations director for Bethel Springvale Inn.

“We have three meals a day in our dining room, all served restaurant-style,” she said. “We do laundry and housekeeping once a week. We also offer a wide variety of activity programs, which really help with the isolation that seniors can sometimes feel. The Inn has a heated indoor pool, and there is easy access to our retail center on the ground level which includes a deli, post office, bank, a beauty salon, and a dentist and medical doctor.”

Bethel Springvale Inn also has its own salon where residents can stop in to have their hair styled or cut and/or to get a manicure.

“Residents can always feel and look their best,” Pelican said.

The Inn’s full-time recreation director oversees an array of activities six days a week, which includes chair yoga, music therapy, a pet therapy program, Zumba Gold, arts and crafts, card games, and, of course, Bingo.

“We also offer 'happy hour' twice a week with live music,” Pelican said.

And, of course, Bethel Springvale Inn offers a range of clinical and personal services to residents should they need them.

“Peace of mind is important for the residents and their families,” Pelican said. “And we provide that with 24-hour nursing services, medication management, personal care and individualized wellness services for each resident.

“We also have primary-care doctors who have office hours here in our building,” Pelican continued. “Residents can just walk down the hall to go to a doctor appointment, get all their prescriptions delivered and have their medications monitored.

“While some residents are just renting, there are others who need enriched care; this includes assistance with bathing, and escorts to meals and social programs, as well as transportation to medical appointments.”

Bethel Springvale Inn can also arrange for residents to receive in-house physical therapy or outpatient therapy, which is offered across the street at Bethel’s skilled nursing and rehabilitation center and for which transportation is provided.

Residents have access to other medical professionals, as well, such as psychologists and podiatrists, among others, in addition to comprehensive case management services.

But what really sets Bethel Springvale Inn apart, Pelican said, is its affordability.

“Many seniors choose us because we are the most affordable assisted senior living residence in Westchester County to offer such quality and value,” Pelican said. “Families come in and tour, look at the options and compare. Those who do their homework know that we provide great, professional, quality care along with the highest level of affordability.”

Bethel Springvale Inn Assisted Living Residence, located at 62 Springvale Road, Croton on Hudson, is unique in its ability to accommodate seniors in need of a little assistance to live a worry-free life with affordable and quality services. Bethel truly is at the heart of senior living. Call them at 914-739-4404.

Catching up with Westchester County Executive George Latimer

George Latimer, our new county executive, has been in office now for a little over half a year. I thought it might be a good time to check in with my friend to see how things were going. You can see the interview in its entirety on Channel 74 (Optimum) at 9 p.m. Wednesday nights.

You’ll Get a Kick out of Musical Classic ‘Anything Goes’

I’ve loved Broadway musicals since I was smaller than a piano bench. That’s one reason I enjoy writing about local productions in this space. The more people who go to musicals, the happier it makes me.

I didn’t realize how old-fashioned about musicals I could be, though, until my wife Elyse and I at long last saw “Wicked.” It only took us 15 years to get there.

Real life is not the movies.

Things are not wrapped up in a neat bow, motivations are not explained, and things often don’t make sense.

Two weeks ago, a man driving “triple digits” in a Dodge Charger exited the Taconic State Parkway at Underhill Avenue, blew through a stop sign, and t-boned an SUV, injuring a mother and her 19-year-old daughter. Here is ...

The Adventures of Superdog

I was always very impressed that my dog could bark on command and come when I called his name, until I read in the newspaper about a dog that saved his owner’s life by calling 9-1-1. Apparently, when his owner had a seizure, the dog pushed a speed-dial button for 9-1-1, barked into the receiver for help, and then opened the door when the responders arrived.

Honestly, though, it’s ...

If You See Something, Say Something

July 11, 2018

I am writing this letter because I see something different with the new Yorktown Town Board. I see an open government instead of a dictatorship with rubber stamps. I see the new Town Board working together for the best interests of the residents in Yorktown.

The auditor suggests in his report to not start a capital project without having the money first. A bad example is the Granite Knolls ...
