I would like to alert Supervisor Michael Grace to a computational error that was made in his State of the Town address on March 2. In describing the rate of tax levy increase over the past five years, he indicated that in “five years the (tax) levy has only increased $500,000 on a $29,000,000 levy.” Supervisor Grace went on to identify that amount as a 0.017 percent increase. In fact, 0.017 percent of $29,000,000 is less than $5,000. In fact, the tax rate has increased 1.7 percent. When calculating percentages, it is important to move decimals accordingly. A common error but, in the interest of transparency and fiscal planning, one that requires clarification.
