The First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown has completed the requirements for GreenFaith certification (www.greenfaith.org). GreenFaith is an organization which helps religious communities grow in environmental leadership. GreenFaith certification was a two year process that required a number of accomplishments in the areas of stewardship, education, worship, environmental justice advocacy, and communications. The church was also required to have several interfaith and intergenerational events.

In stewardship, the church was required to accomplish at least 25 tasks covering both action and awareness in the areas of energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction, toxin reduction, responsible outdoor maintenance, transportation, and food issues. In worship, the church held multiple services and themes oriented around environmental issues. Congregation members also participated in activities related to environmental advocacy, both locally and internationally.

People in Yorktown and the surrounding community are invited to walk the church's outdoor labyrinth, which was installed last year as a way to find spiritual connectedness in our outdoor environment. For more information, see www.fpcyorktown.org/green-faith.
