SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – In 2019, Lakeland was the No. 17 seed, losing at No. 16 Brewster, 3-1, in the out-bracket round of the Section 1 Class A Tournament, finished with a record of 7-8-2.

“We want to improve every day, and be playing our best soccer in November,” said Lakeland’s third-year coach, Shawn Sullivan. “We have a lot of experience and a number of very technical players that will need to play together in order for us to be successful in a very challenging league.”

Leading Lakeland in goals last year were central midfielder Francesca Gerbasi and winger Ava Pagliaro. The seniors registered 10 goals apiece last year.

Junior central midfielders, Linda Daly, All-Section and All-League, and Nadia Parisi, All-Section honorable mention and All-League, are two other key offensive players.

“This group provides us with a strong midfield,” Sullivan said. “We hope to possess the ball a lot this year and attack when the opening arises. They have all been playing together on varsity for three years, and they really play well off of each other.”

Junior center back Mikayla Gustavson, junior fullbacks Jordan Pepaj and Kate Mac Donald, senior center back Sydney Nivar, and senior goalkeeper Sarah Pinkowsky fortify the defense.

“All four started most games last year on defense,” Sullivan said. “We look for them to play well together as a unit and limit goal-scoring chances for the opposition.”

Lakeland begins its season at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, vs. Brewster on its senior night.
