YORKTOWN, N.Y.-Yorktown senior grappler Connor Thomas won his first match in the 152-pound bracket at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany Feb. 23-24.
He was then up 2-1 with two seconds left against Rocky Point’s Corey Connolly in the quarterfinals before dislocating his elbow and losing in heartbreaking fashion 3-2.
“In the second match, against the No. 4 seed, I executed our game plan well, and was on track for the victory,” Thomas said. “I was defending my lead, late in the third period, when he attempted to throw me. During the subsequent scramble, my elbow unfortunately popped and I gave up the takedown in the final seconds. The injury forced me out of the competition. I am very disappointed that I couldn’t continue to wrestle, because I would have had the ability to wrestle back and pursue my goal of earning all-state honors.”
