WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lakeland Central School District was well-represented at the 57th annual West Point Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Celebration on Sunday, Sept. 2.
George Washington Principal Tracy Norman and Director of Guidance Frank Accetta presented two first-time Youth Excellence Awards during the ceremonies to two students. Norman is a lieutenant colonel in the New Jersey Army National Guard and Frank is a master sergeant, infantry (USA retired), having served 22 years in the Army.
Accetta has been collaborating with the Buffalo Soldiers Association since his days as an administrator in Highland Falls and worked with Dr. Aundrea Matthews in establishing Operation Impact, an after-school program focused on STEAM activities that culminated in a field trip to the Engineering Building at the USMA using “State of the Art” software to design, build and test virtual drones on simulated terrain.
A STEAM program is being introduced at George Washington this school year and the district is hopeful of expanding the connection with West Point.
The annual event honors the Buffalo Soldiers and their efforts on behalf of our country since WWI. For more information on this historic unit, visit buffalosoldiersofwestpoint.org.
