The Lakeland Central School District is seeking a new superintendent and has enlisted the help of School Leadership LLC, a professional search firm.
Superintendent Dr. George Stone announced last spring that after 10 years as superintendent, he will retire June 30, 2020.
“There comes a time in everyone’s life when they need to take a little time to relax and enjoy life and spoil grandkids,” Stone said last summer. “I’ll be leaving the best job in the best place that I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot of jobs in a lot of places.”
The school board began its search for a firm to help with the hiring process on Aug. 23, when it issued a Request for Proposals (RFP), to seven different organizations. On Oct. 15, prospective firms were interviewed by the board.
At the Nov. 7 Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously voted to appoint School Leadership to conduct a search for a new superintendent for $20,000, plus any additional expenses that may occur.
“One of the most significant responsibilities of a New York State school board is to hire and evaluate the superintendent of schools,” board President Michael Daly said. “At our July 11 meeting, the board determined that hiring a professional search firm would provide us with access to the quality of talent that Lakeland has come to expect from its leadership. After careful evaluation and positive referrals from multiple references, we determined that School Leadership was the best fit for our district.”
School Leadership is one of the largest companies in New York that conducts educational leadership searches. To date, the firm has served more than 100 schools and districts throughout New York.
The board plans to meet in December to establish its next steps and a time frame for the search. After the meeting, School Leadership will work with stakeholders by conducting surveys, open meetings and focus groups. Updates on the search will be provided to the public through social media and emails, and the district plans to create a website that will provide more information on the search.
