YORKTOWN, N.Y.-Nothing fills the heart of a high school boys basketball fan more than two crosstown rivals going at it in a hot gym on a cold-winter night, passionate fans from both sides cheering them on.
That was the case when Lakeland played at crosstown rival Yorktown on Dec. 6.
The Hornets, leading 46-28 at the end of the third quarter, looked as if they were going to cruise to victory. That’s when Yorktown came storming back to make a game of it in the final stanza.
Lakeland, however, was strong enough to hold on to a thrilling 58-53 triumph.
“This is a big one, to come into their court and get the win,” Lakeland senior Chris Foci said. “They are crosstown rivals. We always see them around so it means a lot to come away with the victory. It’s really big for our team.”
Lakeland looked on fire from the start, as it led 17-6 at the end of the opening quarter and 37-17 at halftime.
