SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – The Lakeland Central School District Debate Team hosted the annual Westchester Classic debate tournament at Lakeland High School on March 4 and 5. A record 458 students representing 43 schools from eight states—California (two schools), Florida (two schools), Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas—and Washington, D.C. participated in the tournament.

Lakeland utilized every available classroom and 15 tables in the gym to organize 629 debates for the students. Each debate lasted between 45 and 90 minutes. During these 639 debates, the 458 students delivered 5,354 speeches. They also participated in 2,618 crossfire/questioning periods.

“The more than 40 members of the Lakeland Central School District Debate Team worked very hard to support all of our guests, to provide housing to many out of town students, and to judge many of the debates in the novice and middle school divisions,” said Stefan Bauschard, debate team coach.
