YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown Central School District Board of Education is seeking candidates to replace Christine Montero, who resigned from the school board last week to avoid any potential conflict of interest with the newly hired superintendent of schools, Dr. Ronald Hattar, who is also her brother.

Montero, who was appointed to the school board in 2011 and re-elected twice after that, announced her intention to resign at the June 5 school board meeting. The school board said she was not involved in the superintendent selection process.

One year remained on Montero's term, which will be filled by school board appointment. That person will serve until May 15, 2018, when an election for a full three-year term will be held.

Those interested must send a letter of interest, resume, and any other information they would like the board to consider to Yvette Segal, district clerk, Yorktown Central School District, 2725 Crompond Road, Yorktown Heights, N.Y. 10598, or via email YSegal@yorktown.org.

The deadline for applications is 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14. The board plans to interview candidates at its Aug. 28, meeting.

Is Yorktown’s Zoning Being Undermined?

September 13, 2017

Are Yorktown’s residential neighborhoods in danger? Is the town board undermining our existing zoning by an excessive—and inappropriate—use of an obscure provision of the zoning code that allows a parcel to be rezoned to an open-ended, anything is permissible, 100 percent negotiated “transitional zone”?

It’s time to take a closer look at this emerging ...

The Art of the Deal

I have written repeatedly that the media cannot separate Trump from his supporters.  They did not create him, so they, no matter how hard they have tried, cannot take him down. Only Trump can separate himself from his supporters.

Last Thursday I woke up to headlines saying Trump, Schumer and Pelosi have brokered a deal that will enshrine amnesty on the “Dreamers,” promise more ...

My Birthday Question

When I was 20, I was confronted with the following allegory: imagine that the wisest person who ever lived is dying. As a parting gift to the planet, the wisest one has agreed to travel the world and answer people’s questions. Luckily, after waiting in line for hours, you are able to ask your one question. What is your question?

Actually, this allegory is from a whole family of questions ...

A Shampoo by Any Other Name

“What’s in the bag?” I asked my mother as she got into the car. She had just come out of the hair salon and apparently had been talked into buying some high-end hair products.

“New shampoo,” she said with some excitement. “My old shampoo was terrible. It really dried out my hair.”

“What brand were you using?” I asked. She thought for a ...

To Home School or Not to Home School

Dear Dr. Linda,

We’re only into the second week of school and our fifth-grade son, Joey, doesn’t want to go to school again. He’s never liked school. For years we blamed his teachers. Then we put him in private school and it didn’t get better.

He’s a bright kid and self-driven. When he’s home, he’s never bored. He’s not playing video games or ...
