YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Alice May Samuels arrived at the Commerce Street firehouse on Wednesday evening, as she has done for 68 years, for a meeting of the Women's Auxiliary of Yorktown Heights Fire Company No. 1.
But the longtime community servant, who was celebrating her 90th birthday, was surprised by friends, family and elected officials, who honored Samuels for her continued dedication to the town of Yorktown.
Federal, state, county, and town officials took turns bestowing their own proclamations upon Samuels. County Legislator Vedat Gashi announced that Thursday, July 2, 2020, would be recognized as "Alice May Samuels Day" in Westchester County, with her name showing on the jumbotron outside of the Westchester County Center in White Plains.
