This letter is in response Israel Fleiss’ letter last week (Page 10, “Really, Andy?”). You write: “But Andy, you can’t blame the tragically slow response to Katrina on them (the Democrats); it was George W. who sat in the White House at the time.”
Just to set the record straight, it was Ray Nagin, a Democrat that was the mayor at the time. It was Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, a Democrat who was governor at the time. Another thing, experts say when natural disasters strike, it is the primary responsibility of the state and local governments—not the federal government—to respond. The blame for the poor response should be laid squarely on the state and local government.
One last thing to remember: Ray Nagin, who served as the mayor of New Orleans during the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, was sentenced to 10 years in prison following his conviction on a host of corruption charges.
Maybe you owe Andy an apology?
