RYE BROOK, N.Y. - Middle school girls from throughout the country were honored earlier this month by ThinkSTEAM, an organization founded by Lakeland High School student Jothi Ramaswamy. The organization handed out awards for its ThinkBIG Challenge at the Business Council of Westchester office on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

The ThinkBIG Challenge was designed to ignite students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). It challenged girls to explore the importance of STEM by creating a 1-4 minute video inspiring girls to enter STEM fields and/or how this can be done through the arts.

Not Neutral on the Internet

I think one of the reasons I have been able to have a print column for the last 10 years is that I have an understanding of most of the readers. I have not lost “the common touch.” I am one of you. So when it comes to computers, I believe I am no different from most of you. I know how to turn it on. I know how to get and use the functions I need. After that, I am lost.

So whenever ...

The Scorpion and the Frog

The ability to think both rationally and critically is an essential skill. The distinction between rational and critical thinking is worth noting. Say, for example, you make last-minute plans with friends to go for dinner with the proviso that you pick the restaurant. It’s 6 p.m. and you want to meet them in an hour because their babysitter can only stay until 9:30. To make an informed ...

The Millennial Guide to Shopping

My 27-year-old daughter, Elissa, asked me what I wanted this holiday season. My choice was one of those newfangled, voice-activated digital doodads disguised as an unassuming sound speaker but which otherwise behaves like the late, great Robin Williams’ Genie from Disney’s “Aladdin.” “Your wish is my command!”

Already knowing the two dominant brands in this ...

The Eyebrows Have It

As I perused the latest fashion magazine, I noticed something about the models.

They all had big eyebrows. Big, perfect eyebrows. Big, sculpted, perfectly groomed and arched eyebrows.

And I did not.

Not that I’m comparing myself to a model, because that would be impossible on just so many levels. I could not make myself 6 feet tall, 115 pounds and willowy without a body transplant.

What Are the Real Issues Affecting Bad Grades?

Dear Dr. Linda,

We have two boys, Dan in 11th grade and Luke in eighth. Dan always gets straight A’s while his younger brother, Luke, gets B’s and C’s. As the years have gone on, Dan has kept his grades up but Luke’s have gone down. Not only have his grades gone down, but he seems to have actually “checked out.” He goes to school but does poorly and ...

Come to Meet and Greet

December 6, 2017

To the editor,

Another year almost gone, the elections are over and the holidays are upon us. For some of us it is a time to be thankful, huddle with our families and friends, reflect on our accomplishments, acknowledge our failures and set goals for the coming new year. We will be celebrating the successes of our community, its businesses, residents and community service organizations as well ...
