HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. - Summer is here—a time when many homeowners and other DIY weekend warriors finally get around to taking on those long-awaited home improvement projects. Paving the way and making those tasks a little less intimidating is Wallauer Paint and Design. They have you covered from start to finish for all your home improvement needs.

The business was started by the Wallauer/Duncan family in White Plains 98 years ago, according to Ed Klein, Wallauer’s chief operating officer. They acquired six new stores last year bringing the total to 17 locations, including 14 in Westchester County and two in Putnam and one in Rockland, Wallauer’s has been helping homeowners with their paint and decorating needs since 1921.

Klein said all the Wallauer stores carry a full spectrum of paint and decorating products. Services Wallauer offers include in-store and at-home color and/or design consultations, and professional installation for all window coverings, including blinds, shades, shutters and draperies. They also carry major brands such as Hunter Douglas, Benjamin Moore paint and stains as well as franchised Ace Hardware stores. In fact, Wallauer’s is the largest Benjamin Moore paint dealer in Westchester, Putnam, and Rockland counties.

“We are one of Benjamin Moore’s Top 10 dealers in North America. It gives you an idea of our scale and expertise,” Klein said. “We sell a lot of paint. It’s 75 percent of our business.”

Their paint departments offer an extensive line of interior, exterior and specialty paints, stains and everything else needed for just about any decorating project.

But Klein says one shouldn’t think of Wallauer Paint and Design as a big-box chain store. It’s a local family-owned business that prides itself on its customer service and offers all the clout of a large chain but with a mom-and-pop-store ambiance that provides a personal touch from a knowledgeable, experienced, friendly staff.

“We are opening a new Ace Hardware store in New Rochelle in July ” Klein noted. “We have been involved with Ace for about five years.”

Klein said Wallauer’s is poised to help not just the DIYers and contractors, but the growing trend of  Do-It-For-Me (DIFM) crowd as well.

“Our product knowledge and service are very unique,” Klein said. “We deal with all types of projects. For the DIFMs, they are very involved in picking the colors and asking for advice—and then hand the job off to the contractor. When it’s something like window treatments and they know what their expectations are, they leverage our designer’s expertise on design, function and value. The project is then professionally measured and installed for the perfect design solution.”

Wallauer’s has 14 designers on staff who do a lot of in-home color consultations.

“A lot of customers want the designers to come to their home, rather than having to come to the store,” Klein said. “We do a lot of color and design consultations and the trend is building. ”

So, what sets Wallauer’s apart from other home-improvement paint and hardware stores?

‘The major difference is our people,” Klein said. “The average tenure of our employees is 20 years and they know this category inside out. Our customer service is the No.1 differentiator We view ourselves as a family-owned go-to place for both contractors and homeowners.”

Klein said he’s very optimistic about the future of Wallauer Paint and Design as the business continues to grow.

“We have a business plan for both organic growth and potential acquisitions,” Klein said. “Rockland and Putnam counties are a big target as well as further leveraging and growing our Outside Paint and Design teams throughout Westchester. The number of outlets we have in total are solid,  it now comes down to serving the changing needs of the consumer and contractors in the future and having a great team of employees.”
