YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Now in sixth grade, the girls from Troop 1376 have been donating Girl Scout cookies to the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital since kindergarten, when they had a friend in the hospital.
Rather than donating to a cause far away, Troop Leader Lori Scanlan wanted to help the girls choose a local cause that they could see and experience first-hand. Scanlan said the donated cookies are given to children at the hospital who cannot have dairy items from the hospital’s ice cream carts, as well as to the various activities, events and support groups provided to the families of patients at the hospital.
That first year, they collected about 100 boxes. Last year, they donated 300 boxes and this year they hope to surpass that. By setting up a booth at public locations and providing their troop email below, they hope that with the help of the community, they can provide a small comfort to the patients of Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and their families.
“We’re a small troop, but we know we can make a big impact,” Scanlan said.
