YORKTOWN, N.Y.-Yorktown’s wrestling squad won a thrilling 37-36 match at Carmel on Dec. 19 when senior captain Matt Steigmeier and sophomore Tyler Rodriguez recorded back to back pins at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively.

“It was definitely a morale boost for the team and me but it was a little too close for comfort,” Rodriguez said. “Forfeiting two weight classes, we knew we needed pins.”

Rodriguez’ pin tied the match at 36-36 and the Huskers won the tiebreaker with eight wins to Carmel’s seven wins, which gave Yorktown the bonus point for the victory.

“I used a power half to turn him to his back in the first period, and I was thinking, I have to pin him so we win the match,” Rodriguez said.
