To the Editor, The Covid19 pandemic is revealing so much about the character of the American people. Some flaws but mostly positive. It also has reaffirmed for me many things I already knew about Yorktown. This is a great community. From the beginning of the pandemic Supervisor Slater was taking proactive steps in cleaning, social distancing and supporting the first responders and local businesses. But he wasn’t the only one taking action. Sergio Esposito of the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce is pushing for residents to support local business. The 3,700 people on the Facebook page, Yorktown Eat, Drink & Support have promoted the local restaurants and services needing help. A special thanks to Cathy Guaragno for all of her work. Additionally, the Alliance for Safe Kids and the Community Food Pantry at St. Mary’s who have been there when people needed them most. I thank the countless neighbors who have looked out for each other and given support and comfort in this surreal time where we can’t touch friends, comfort the sick or mourn our dead without the embrace of a loved one. The fear I sometimes see when someone gets too close in a store will also pass. This pandemic will subside and we all will be changed in some way but I hope we remember the time when there was no Republican or Democrat Yorktown, no Shrub Oak or Jefferson Valley only a united Yorktown that looked out for each other for the common good.
