YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Local Marine Cpl. Robert Kaplan stopped by Brookside Elementary School last week to pick up toys the school had collected for Toys for Tots. Thanks to Brookside's generosity, Kaplan left the school with 678 toys in tow.

The Yorktown program has been organized by another local Marine, Al Laughlin, for a decade. Laughlin said he was amazed the parents, children and staff were able to break last year’s record of 495 toys.

“They smashed last year’s record," he said. "This is unbelievable and one of the largest collections in the area."

The toy drive is a community action program of the Marine Corp and this year will provide holiday gifts to roughly 900 local families, added Laughlin.

Teacher Lisa Santosusso has been coordinating this annual toy drive for several years.

“I love that we can truly make a difference and bring joy to so many families in need," Santosusso said. "It is all about giving to others and spreading kindness during the holiday season. It is a positive experience for everybody."
