YORKTOWN, N.Y.-Yorktown High School junior Nimisha Gupta was recently honored by the Town of Yorktown for completing her arangetram, which is the debut on-stage performance of a former student of Indian classical dance and music. This first performance follows years of training.

In the case of Gupta, she completed her Bharatanatyam training in 10 years. Her dance teacher is Dr. Nalini Rau of Yorktown. Councilman Vishnu Patel presented Gupta with a certificate of achievement on behalf of the town.

Bharatanatyam is a major genre of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. Traditionally, Bharatanatyam has been a solo dance that was performed exclusively by women and expressed Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism, but also of Vaishnavism and Shaktism.
